Travel update - Qantas prepares for possible ground crew strike

Qantas is preparing contingency plans for a possible nation-wide, four-hour strike by ground crew Tuesday September 20.

The Transport Workers Union has advised the airline that ground crew including baggage handlers, ground staff, catering, freight and employees in other transport roles, are planning to stop work for four hours from 5am.

There is also the possibility of work bans which could affect the airline for up to 48 hours.

On Tuesday 20 September, strike action may go ahead:

  • 7am-11am: Most Eastern Australia airports including Sydney and Melbourne
  • 3pm - 7pm: Canberra
  • 9am - 1pm: Cairns
  • 5am - 9am: Western Australian airports including Perth

If the strike action does go ahead, flight disruptions and delays are expected to affect both domestic and international routes. Travellers are advised to confirm flights prior to heading to the airport.

Qantas passengers are advised to factor in additional time into their travelling schedules in light of possible disruptions on Tuesday and the following days.
